Diversity Goals

July, 2012

Workforce, Management and Boards

KSMQ-TV serves southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa, including the cities of Austin, Albert Lea, Rochester, Mankato, Owatonna and Mason City. For the most part it is a rural area with a rich agricultural history. There are a few mid-sized cities in the KSMQ-TV viewing area, the largest being Rochester (home to the world famous Mayo Clinic), with a population of 106,769. Austin is home to the corporate offices of Hormel, one of the largest food companies in the world. Hormel also has a significant production facility in Austin.

The current approximate population of the KSMQ-TV viewing area is 600,000. Of those, 2010 census data suggest that people of color make up approximately 11% of the population.

Management: KSMQ-TV management will attempt to intentionally include diverse candidates when seeking applicants for management positions. The hiring manager will contact at least two job centers and/or employment agencies located in areas where diverse populations reside in greater numbers. The goal of this process will be to create a workforce that generally resembles the makeup of the viewing area.

Board of Directors: The CEO shall seek counsel regarding selection of a pool of potential Board members from at least two community service agencies in the viewing area. The goal of this process will be to create an overall Board that generally resembles the makeup of the viewing area. The CEO will use the process of intentional inclusion as developed by the Blandin Foundation in order to enhance the diversity of the Board.

Regional Advisory Committee: The KSMQ-TV Regional Advisory Committee provides feedback and general advice to the station as it relates to overall service to the region. By reviewing potential programs and station initiatives, the committee serves as a connection between the station and the communities it serves. The station will broadcast a message on its primary television channel on a regular basis encouraging people of color to consider joining the Regional Advisory Committee. The goal of this process will be to create a Regional Advisory Committee that generally resembles the makeup of the viewing area.

Workforce: KSMQ-TV management will attempt to intentionally include diverse candidates when seeking applicants for general employment positions. The hiring manager will contact at least two job centers and/or employment agencies located in areas where diverse populations reside in greater numbers. The goal of this process will be to create a workforce that generally resembles the makeup of the viewing area.
