Bill Strusinski, longtime friend and champion of Minnesota PBS stations, stopped by the KSMQ studio to talk about his book Care Under Fire which was recently selected as the best work of “Military Nonfiction” by the National Indie Excellence Awards. The book recounts Bill’s experiences as a medic during the Vietnam War.

 
 

 
National Essay Scholarship Winner
 
 

Rochester high school student Erin Stoeckig was the first place national winner of the VFW Voice of Democracy scholarship program. In this video, she talks about how she won the award by following in her father’s footsteps, and Erin reads her winning essay “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?”

 

 


 
Tripping the Poverty Trap
 
 

In partnership with Jeremiah Program Rochester, KSMQ hosted a conversation with community members about combating generational poverty, presented by KSMQ President & CEO Eric Olson.

The Minnesota Orchestra Brass Quintet performs in the KSMQ studio. Members of the orchestra played in several locations around Austin during the first week in May. The series is known as Common Chords, in which the Orchestra immerses itself in a single community for a week. The week culminated with the full orchestra performing at Knowlton Auditorium.

The Austin Symphony Orchestra has a new addition, and it's a reason to celebrate! With the help of generous donations, the ASO recently purchased a piano: the Fazioli F 308, one of the finest pianos in the world. KSMQ partnered with the ASO to bring you its debut performance recorded live at the Knowlton Auditorium in Austin. World renowned pianist Roberto Plano introduces this magnificent musical instrument to Minnesota.

 


  

 KSMQ Public Television partnered with MacPhail Center for Music to produce "Connections and Transformations." This special was developed by Mischa Santora, the MacPhail Center for Music’s Spotlight Series Artistic Director.

In this feature of the COVID Gap: Addressing the Pandemic Racial Divide, R-Town Associate Producer Nicole Nfonoyim-Hara discusses the large divide in COVID hospitalizations and deaths between the white and black communities in Minnesota. Joining her in this discussion is Dr. LaPrincess Brewer, a cardiologist with a primary focus in developing strategies to reduce cardiovascular disease health disparities in racial and ethnic minority populations, and Pastor Kenneth Rowe, Senior Pastor of Christ's Church of the Jesus Hour in Rochester and well known community advocate.

She and R-Town Associate Producer and Host Nicole Nfonoyim-Hara discuss the large divide in COVID hospitalizations and deaths between the white and black communities in Minnesota. Community Health Service Inc. (CHSI) is a federally qualified healthcare center, serving uninsured and underinsured communities in the Midwest and is dedicated to health equity.

They sit with R-Town Associate Producer and Moderator Nicole Nfonoyim-Hara to discuss the large divide in COVID hospitalizations and deaths between the white and Asian American communities, specifically the Hmong community in Minnesota. Bo Thao-Urabe is the Executive and Network Director of the Coalition of Asian American Leaders, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Chao Yang is the founder of the Hmong Public Health Association, a catalyst of change and a leader with intense focus on impact.

What COVID Took from Us: Mental Health Across Generations was a KSMQ produced live-streamed discussion with R-Town correspondent Danielle Teal featuring Rochester community mental health advocates, Sean Kinsella with NAMI Southeast Minnesota and Ashleigh Dowis with Family Service Rochester. This discussion was about the growing mental health issues in the time of the pandemic across multiple generations.
